Keeping orphaned children in school
School fees, uniforms and materials for orphaned and vulnerable children, so that losing a parent does not also mean losing an education.
Children who lose a parent in rural Rwanda often lose their place in a classroom within the same year. Fees, a uniform and exercise books are not large sums, but they are more than a grandmother or an older sibling farming alone can find.
We work through the households already caring for these children rather than around them, covering what is missing so that the child stays where they are, with the people who know them, and keeps going to school.
Why this sits alongside counselling
The families in this programme are frequently the same families in the counselling programme. Grief and school fees are not separate problems to the person living through both, and we have stopped treating them as separate programmes.
